Paranormal Activity 3

**Post has spoilers**

Paranormal Activity 3 opened this weekend. In the past three days the movie has already raked in close to $80 million, $54 million being in the United States.

For me it was a much anticipated movie as I am big fan of the franchise. You can read my review of Paranormal Activity 1 here. I could never really muster any courage to write about part 2.

Part 3 of the Paranormal Activity movie series was great. It is a prequel, so you may want to see the first two movies to make the connection. The child actresses have done a great job in this movie.

If you want to be scared, this movie scares you. I liked the narrative and acting in this movie but I was also able to appreciate the direction of the movie. They (the production crew) have developed a formula and it works. It really works!

  1. They build up slowly and pinnacle to a great end.
  2. Silence works. Deafening silence in the still of the night definitely keeps the audience engaged. Small thud, big thud, low flutter, silence, more silence, nothing..it all gets to you!
  3. They really know how to build anticipation. I don’t know how but my heart rate was elevated during the movie. The half open door in the couple’s room at night and the bubbling in the fish tank of the kids’ room had a subtle impact on my psych.
  4. They show everyday lives and homes everyone can identify with. That is the most frightening part! Other horror movies play the ‘blood and gore’ card on audiences which is scary but does not appear real. This movie appears so real that it sends jitters.
  5. I found myself craning to see if I missed anything moving, or any clue at all for the next scare! I realized everyone was doing just that.

The movie is a lot different than the previous two installments.

  1. One, the movie is set in the 80s so the decor and the clothing is quite 80s. The cameras are old and I quite loved the idea of the camera on the rotating fan! How original!
  2. Two, the ghost/demon is far more daring and angry than shown in the other movies. He starts slow but then transitions to a monster very quickly.
  3. Three, the ghost scares people outside the immediate family too. I cannot get the white sheet walking scene with the babysitter! Even the Bloody Mary scene with Dennis’s friend was quite chilling!
  4. Four, the cult is introduced in this movie.

Overall, I think this movie is great because the audience can relate to it. How often have we brushed aside complaints from little children and told them it was a figment of their imagination? How often have we said no to something we cannot accept or do not want to accept? After this movie adults will listen to what their children have to say..he he!

I really liked the movie but found myself appreciating the direction of the movie and how well they have mastered the formula. I would not say that it is the scariest of all-I found part 1 to be the most creepy, probably because I saw it for the first time, I could not sleep peacefully for weeks, and Katie was locked in my psych, who knows! ? Yet Paranormal Activity 3 is well done in all respects and I recommend all fans to go watch it.
