Inception (2010)
July 19th, 2010 | by Ridhima Suri |*This post has mild spoilers-only what you see in promos & my take on the movie*
Is Inception a complex psycho mind thriller? Yes.
Is Inception full of brilliant ideas ? Absolutely yes.
Is Inception likely to keep you engaged ? There is no doubt about it.
Why watch Inception?
That’s a yes too if you want to experience the thrill of watching something unexpected. You will like this movie for a great narrative, excellent cinematography, superb visual effects, and above all-a great idea! The movie is an action thriller to some and a love story to others. For me, it was just a complex mind game and I clenched by fists as I saw the drama unfold. I did not use my phone during the movie. I was not bored. I was simply engaged and felt the ‘almost real’ special effects.
I loved the scenes shot in the snow, the cracking buildings, the zero gravity fight scenes, and the falling car with sleeping people. The mind is so unpredictable-you never know where it wanders. After watching the movie I read tweets, blog posts, and also discussed the movie with my friends. While everyone raved about the movie, there were many twists and turns that remained twisted..:)
My understanding of this movie
Inception shows men doing unusual jobs facing unusual hazards.
Why is their job unusual?
Their job is unusual as they steal secrets from a subject’s mind. In other words, they spy on people via dreams. Unusual stuff huh! Pretty much as it is the order of the day to see people trash and crash on banks, vaults & homes (in dreams). Breaking in a ‘dream’ is a different ballgame altogether. This job has a title as well-’Extractors’. There are others in the organization chart like a ‘dream architect’, a ‘sedative supplier’, and a ‘shape shifter’. Together they make a lethal team and get the job done.
What are the hazards of their jobs?
The movie shows a rather unique technique of stealing ‘dreams’ from the subconscious minds in a modern setting. There is no doubt that the job has its own hazards. For example, Cobb loses his wife as she is unable to differentiate between reality and dreams. Even after she dies, she is stuck in his subconscious and that keeps him from doing his job properly. There is a sensitive portrayal of how some memories get stuck in the mind. After all it’s a mind game and human mind tends to deviate from the right path. Even the most controlled men have succumbed to insanity and tumultuous emotions!
The plot line
That said, the plot is unique. The extractors (DiCaprio & his team) get information from a subject’s mind by getting into their sub-conscious minds. Having failed a mission they go under and land another job- this time not of extracting information from a subject but of planting an idea in his brain (inception). The execution of this job involves a series of complex decisions, research, experimentation, spontaneity, & improvisations. All this is done in a completely modern setting. Overall, the movie does not have any lows- it starts well, soars high and builds towards a great climax.
Christophar Nolan has done a great job and Leonardo Di Caprio acts well! I like the background music-it adds darkness and thrill to the plot. I also like the special effects. That said I do not want to post spoilers and certainly my blog post has not given much away. So go watch it!

Well Said Ridhima. I am in love with the cinematography of the movie. The generic review of movie is combination of stunts of matrix and mind games from memento…. One point wanted to add is our mind stores special memories in some kind of pockets(subconscious)and we go revive those when we want..

And inception is all about exploring these deep deep pockets..:) well said Ruchita. Christophar Nolan deserves all the accolades. I am not sure if this movie will be nominated for Oscars but it surely is one helluva blockbuster.

What can you say other than Inception is a brilliant movie! Nolan does it time and time again! I was a little skeptical going into the movie, I love Leo and Nolan, their movies are always good. But the premise sounded a little strange. Then you see it and it really is a mind blowing movie. 10 out of 10 stars!
