Movie Review: Kurbaan (2009)
November 21st, 2009 | by Ridhima Suri |
By far ‘Kurbaan’ is a decent watch and successfully engages the audience. I am a big fan of hindi movies but have been bitterly disappointed by recent movie releases. Kurbaan did not let anyone sleep! I went to watch this movie only because I liked the song ‘Shukraan’ but got more than just lyrics n music!
The movie portrays the love between Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan and quickly moves on to show a conspiracy for terrorist attacks. The love story was not lingered on and there was no singing around the trees. I really like the storyline and appreciate the fact that Karan Johar has given us a decent watch.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor play their roles well and the on-screen chemistry seems to be explored to newer dimensions. Vivek Oberoi has given a great performance. Om Puri acts well but I have to say Kiron Kher is such a versatile and talented actress! Ask her to play a Bengali lady, Punjabi mom and an Afghani fundamentalist, she does not fail to surprise us. She does justice to all. Five stars to Kher.
Despite a few loopholes the movie manages to grip the audience till the very end. The storyline is, of course, very sad and draws attention to global terrorism. The sadness is obvious even in the clothing of the actors! Kareena is dressed in vibrant colors for the first thirty minutes and looks pretty. In the rest of the movie she looks grieved and dresses in dull colors. There is no remorse in the terrorist group. They are portrayed to do their jobs without any sympathy.
Very nice cinematography..should appeal to Indians living in U.S. and elsewhere. The movie manages to pull off a good balance between ‘good’ and ‘evil’. I wish the world is more peaceful place to live and such movies become a ‘fantasy’. Alas! That is not the case and we can start by being more empathetic, kind, forgiving, and just.
Since I am very happy to watch the movie, I will not count the loopholes (which were there, no doubt, but not worth harping about much!) This movie is a decent watch and should not be missed if you are a Bollywood moviewatcher. This is certainly not the movie in which you wish ends soon or makes you want to get popcorn..:D
Karan Johar-It was a pleasure to meet you during the filming of My Name is Khan. It is a pleasure to watch ‘Kurbaan’ today. Keep up the good work!
