My favourite Kosmix results

December 18th, 2008 | by Ridhima Suri |

My husband and I spend a lot of time discussing why a page gets my nod and what falls short of my expectations on kosmix.com.  My husband who works at Kosmix emphatically drives the discussion to the solid question of how to make search results better on the website for simple users like me.  Obviously there is no ‘yes and no’ answer to such discussions but I have personally seen the search results of www.kosmix.com getting fiercely better!  I also hope that his endeavour to be perfect is successful.

In continuation to my previous post I will discuss some of my favourite searches on Kosmix along with specific reasons of my liking for the pages that showed up on www.kosmix.com

  1. I searched for details on ‘H4 visa’ and got this page http://www.kosmix.com/topic/h4_visa The page has a wealth of information and will save your time while you process your visa applications and other paperwork.
  2. I searched for ‘chromatographic spectroscopy’.  The spelling I typed was not correct and hence I was prompted if I wanted to see results for Chromatography spectroscopy.  I did and hence this page pulled up on http://www.kosmix.com/topic/Chromatography_spectroscopy and I understood the basics of the concept but wandered about looking at other issues presented on the page.  It was interesting to browse categories/fields like scientific techniques and seperation processes.  There were many suggestions for shopping, videos, etc.  I am sure I would have gone to Yahoo answers but noticed many discussions listed at the bottom of the page.  It was pretty neat.
  3. Fans of Oprah Winfrey must check the page on http://www.kosmix.com/topic/Oprah_Winfrey.  I was pleasantly surprised to know about many new aspects of Oprah’s personal and professional life while browsing back and forth  between the kosmix pages.  I also stumbled on a very interesting video of Oprah Winfrey at the Stanford 2008 Commencement.  I believe this is the pleasure of simply exploring a topic and walking away with much more than you had anticipated.  I was also pleased to see what related book was being sold on ebay!
  4. I searched my favourite subject ‘Organisation Behaviour’ and got the following result http://www.kosmix.com/topic/Organisation_Behaviour.  If you carefully browse the ‘Related in the Kosmos” section you will find a number of related suggestions on where the knowledge of organisation behaviour is plugged in.  Of course I already knew many aspects of OB like learning orgsnisations, group dynamics, organisational development, group behavoiur.  I did not know quite a lot of new concepts like worforce bullying, antisocial personality disorder, so on an dso forth. I gained more knowledge than I expected again!

I believe my current searching habit is not fully tuned to looking for related materials or information.  I have a keyword in mind or a question and I simply google it and get a point blank answer.  I do not think more.  Google does not tell me more.  Period.

By browsing on Kosmix I am not forced to think out of the box.  The ‘explore engine’ thinks for me and gives me idea.  I simply search some information.  I get several answers in the forms of ‘related content’, videos, widgets, shopping links, travel links, and other useful links.  All on one page.  I do not think more.  But Kosmix tells me much much more.  Period.  Interesting!
