JEE 2007 Counselling Help
June 20th, 2007 | by Ridhima Suri |The results of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) 2007 are out. The next thing in line is facing the counseling. Advice helps. Some of our friends and cousins secured a good result and one of them had a question. The question was to rate and order some of the realistic options as suggested below.
1) textile — iit delhi
2) chemical iit guwahati
3) civil iit roorkee
4) civil iit guwahati
5) biotech iit roorkee
6) biotech iit guwahati
7) food & agriculture iit kharagpur
My husband wrote back a long and detailed reply. I thought of putting it up on the blog here, since I am sure there are a lot of people who must be seeking and exchanging quick last minute notes.
He wrote
Here’s what I can tell you:
If you order the departments:
Chemical,Textile, and Civil. Biotech and F&A are have relatively fewer opportunities in and of themselves if you want to go into the industry.
Naturally, one of the main 5 IITs Delhi, Kanpur, Bombay, Kgp and Chennai are better with Roorkee and Guwahati close behind.
Here is what you should consider,
1. Almost all IITs have a branch change option where, if you do well in your first year, you can jump to a better branch. You will, however, need to work very hard for this. It is usually much easier to do this at lower ranked IITs but if you can work hard this pays off more in the top ranked ones.
2. Which IIT you are from makes more difference initially and less difference as time goes on. With in a few years after graduation it won’t matter which IIT you are from, only that you are from an IIT. The only tangible difference is that the main 5 IITs have a significantly better organized Alumni network, though that may be less so by the time you graduate.
3. Most students from IITs get into software even if that was not their specialty at graduation. It is better, in my opinion, to be in one of the top 5 IITs in this case as they offer far more facilities and opportunities to pick up stuff from CS just because they have more infrastructure and are more accessible to industry.
4. The top 5 do a little better in placements and summer training.
5. Which branch you join is more important in the sense that it is much harder to do well in a stream that you will not like and easy to get bored. Join a department you appreciate and you will do well. How well you do will probably matter more than where you are and what you are doing.
6. Consider whether you want to get a masters or go into industry. This choice will probably change once you are in IIT but you should still consider this. Which IIT you are from really matters if you want to do your masters. IITs are better in some departments and have professors with great reputation who can get you into any university in the world just by their recommendation. This is probably the biggest reason you should pick the best program for a particular branch if you are interested. However, remember that this only applies if you decide to do masters in the same dept you did your BTech in.
7. Consider if you want to stay close to home or far. Both have advantages and disadvantages and each IIT has a unique culture. Whichever IIT you join, you’ll probably end up liking that culture the most but it is something you might want to consider.
Finally, if there is some branch of engineering you are interested in, make that the top priority. If it’s all same to you, for example if you want to get into software anyways, pick one of the top 5 IITs. If you want to do masters and like one of the depts available to you, go to the best IIT for that dept. I can help you in this if you let me know which one it is.
I know I have probably not given an exact answer. If I was in your place I would probably pick IIT Delhi from your list. But if you are getting textiles there I am sure you will get something in the other top 5 which i would have considered as well.
The bottom-line.
In the end going strictly by the order followed by other people isn’t a good idea. Choose the one best for you.
For all of you who have read so far, please let us know if you have any questions here. Good Luck and Happy Counseling!!!

With all due respect, it seems very haughty to be throwing opinions without sufficient knowledge of the subject, especially when stating “facts” about placement.
FYI, IIT Roorkee has a placement equivalent to the other IITs. Further, the infrastructure at IIT Roorkee is something to be experienced… may be only IIT Kgp can offer a better infrastructure due to the scale of the institute. From personal experience, I know that IIT-Delhi does not even come close. The reason why it does not matter so much today is that with computer science and electrical engineering being the top fields, all you need are good computer centers, connectivity, and well rounded electronics labs. That being said, I would still agree that the old 5 IITs enjoy a better reputation, thanks to the marketing hype.

i wish to join an iit may i get any iit with some good branch?
if not should i join it bhu or ism dhanbad?

Hi Sahil and Anil
First of all, you must apply. Keep your options open, read about all the institutions and talk to students already enrolled. With the new IITs on the market, things are a little unpredictable..but then there is no harm in giving it a try! Researching online will also help you a lot.

i’ve secured rank 623….is electrical engg.at iit kgp better option than computer science at iit roorkee or mechanical at iit delhi…..
By Ridhima Suri on Jun 13, 2008 | Reply
In my opinion, you should take either EE at IITKGP or CS at IIT Roorkee..forget about Mechanical. Ask around during your counseling and make your call then.
Good luck!

Praveen, Aditya and Rajesh, I wish you good luck with your admission process. The opinions mentioned on this blog are personal. We are just trying to help others by giving our opinions. As i always say, ultimately it is your call! Much depends on your interest and other priorities (distance from home, future job prospects, study environment, etc.) so make your final decisions judiciously.
Praveen : i got 2250 AIR…is chemical at iit-guwahati better or civil at roorkee/kanpur/kgp..or cs at it-bhu?
Here are my rankings. As a stream I have a preference for CS over other options.
CS at IIT BHU
Civil at Kanpur/Roorkee
chemical at IIT Guwahati
aditya :can u compare cs at iiit-hyd and metal/mat.sc at iit-roorkee? I would say CS is a good option, but you might want to get into an older IIT if given a choice. So roorkee can be a better chance unless you are convinced that the instruction level at Hyd is great! Since there is no way of telling this unless a few batches pass out, I think you should take Roorkee..good luck!

Rajesh, you need to do your own research about your options. I can certainly help you in making a choice later. If you have any specific questions, please post them here.
Thanks and I wish you all good luck!

i got 846 in jee from north india. pelase guide me for iitd electrical(Power),kanpur mech,or iitr cs.how is aerospace in bombay
By Ridhima Suri on Jun 10, 2009 | Reply
In my opinion, you should take either EE at IITK or CS at IIT Roorkee..Then consider Mech (Anywhere) or Aero (Mumbai). Ask around during your counseling and make a final call. Much depends on what you want to do. Remember that if you score well in the first year you can always make a switch in the second year.
Good luck!

besides, though i was told by someone in the department in Roorkee that the placement scemario in geology is wonderful. I could not cross check the data since no official figures were present on their website. Can you somehow confirm/deny this, i mean is it possible to know something about the placements in this sector in India.
but d b.des. program on d whole looks very very xciting.. Geology z smthing i m quite intrsted in too and would love 2 do it. wat do u suggest??? wat shud i do?? and in geology too, shud it b Mtech in Roorkee or Msc in Kgp??? and if i take up comp.sc. in Mandi, i wnt get gr8 infrastructure/facilities/campus lyf but i would get my first choice subject(geology z second choice subject though its odrwise mentioned in the department heirarchy)… is it a good option to leave an old IIT 4 it??.

I have got 5673 rank in AIEEE and I am expecting ece in NIT TIRCHI ..
what should i do? what are the prospects in geological technology(m. tech intergreted )
in IIT ROORKEE.
By Ridhima Suri on Jun 25, 2009 | Reply
Hi Abhinav,
Geologists are required in projects such as land exploration, urban & rural planning, environmental studies, etc. The unique combination of engineering with geography, chemistry, physics obviously opens a vista of opportunities for students pursuing geological thermology. For example, you can study land mines, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. or work in civil construction.
Both options are good and have different career prospects. It is your call now! Good Luck everyone.

Which IIT would be the best option for B.Tech CSE
IIT Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Roorkee or Kanpur
Kindly arrange them in that order…
By Ridhima on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply
Pankaj,
Since we have an association with IITK, will put IITK as rank 1. However, there is really no comparison..all of these are great institutes. If you are getting CS in any of these-just go for it! Good Luck!
By Rahul on May 26, 2010 | Reply
Well, as like most of the guys i wanna pursue B.Tech CSE from IIT and then probably a MS or PdD from abroad, but am getting CSE only in IIT Guwahanti and may be Kharagpur. So, would it be a wise desion to join them, are faculties over there have as much world repo as in other Older IITs??
or should I drop CSE and go for ME/EE at IIT Delhi Or Kanpur..??
By Ridhima Suri on May 26, 2010 | Reply
Hey Rahul,
I would say go for the branch and not the institute. Having said that, CSE at Kharagpur sounds great to me.
Good luck!
By Rahul on May 27, 2010 | Reply
But wat bout CSE at Guwahati, should I put it above IITB/D Mech. or below, in my choice list?
By prash on May 30, 2010 | Reply
If you are interested in CS , guwahati is absolutely fine . In fact the most modern infrastructure . Depending on how interested you are ,
it is absolutely fine to put guwahati ahead of the metros . That is just my 2 bits , do your own research ! If at all you have to go to delhi – consider math & computing – if u r interested in CS that is .

Does professor at IIT Kgp recommend their student for doing MS/PhD from abroad?? I heard tat they don’t even allow overseas placement…

I am from mumbai and am getting civil dual at iit kharagpur But are IIT kharagpur, roorkee, kanpur safe for girls. please help I am really confused
By Ridhima on Jun 7, 2010 | Reply
@Pankaj-this is not true. Please verify your facts and talk to some professors if you get a chance.
@Aakanksha-I understand your apprehensions but really there is nothing to worry about. These are some of the best engineering schools in India and safety of students is always a top priority for the administration. The class composition is sometimes very odd-for example 300 boys n 25 girls but that should not get the way of your career goals. Talk to some professors or ex-students to get a better idea of everyday college & hostel life. Good luck!
Watch out for yourself and stay away from trouble. I think you should be fine.

I have to submit my choices today. So plz arrange these priority wise(overall basis).

4.ISM—————petroleum.
5.IIT kgp———–mining(dual).
I am mostly looking to opt for option 1 or 4.Plz can u compare these options…i mean scope and placements wise.can u provide me the avg packages of these branches.
Pl help me to decide my priority order.

By Ridhima on Jun 9, 2010 | Reply
Hello Mayank, Its your call. All the options look great as these institutes are highly competitive. I would suggest that you also consider IITKGP-Mining in addition to 1 & 4. Good luck!
Yogita-I am not sure about the rumor and again, its your call. I would prefer to lean towards KGP but you should pick whatever works best for you. Good Luck!
By prash on Jun 21, 2010 | Reply
Many people from KGP went abroad to study with recos from their professors , so that bit is untrue .
Earlier there was a ban on foreign placements but since 2006/7 that is no longer the case . In any case <10 people are placed abroad (directly) via campus placements for any IIT so don't worry too much about that .

Ridhima ,
Thanks .
We live in a world where we get often get so much useful info from other people on the internet , that we should all contribute to this big pool of info
Crowdsourcing !!
BTW I had also once written an article on things to take into account while selecting a branch/Institute .
Some of these things can be factored in while making decisions not just for IIT but other institutes as well ..
