Empire of the Soul: Some Journeys in India (5/5 Must Read)

by Paul William Roberts

Roberts is a passionate writer. This is not an objective look at Indian philosophy but rather a viewpoint of a westerner… first as a youngster in the early 70′s and then as a well travelled senior writer in the early 90′s.

Its more a path through the spiritual that India offers. One doesn’t necessarily agree with all his views on the various gurus. The views are very obvious about being personal. But he offers a deep insight into their philosophies, histories and motivations.

He travels to Puttaparthi, Tirupati, Goa, Banaras and Pune among others. Satya Sai Baba, Osho and several others are covered. As an aside, he encounters the hippie culture of the 70′s and the insides of the drug trade. Also watchout for a vivid description of the Taj at Bombay, with its history, a journey into the NWFP in Pakistan, a meeting with Mother Teressa and much much more.

A very moving account indeed. A must read.
